The Uzbekistan National Team became the first winner of the "Commonwealth Cup of Amputee Football" in a tournament held here September 19-24.
The tournament included teams from nations which were previously part of the Soviet Union: Ukraine, composed primarily of members of the club team "SKIF "; Moldova; Uzbekistan; Russia, composed primarily of members of the club team "Nizhegorodetz"; and Abkhazia, composed primarily of members of the club team "Dynamo".
Matches Games were conducted under WAFF rules on a field with a synthetic high quality synthetic covering.
The tournament is scheduled to become an annual event. The next commonwea;lth Cup will be held between September 5-10, 2008.
Plans are also underway to expand the event to become an Open European Tournament, with additional teams invited from Europe, Africa and Asia.
The tournament was sponsored by the Russian Disability Sports Federation, the Governor of the Volga Federal District, and the Football Academy of Igor Egorov.
The host city, Nizhniy Novgorod, formerly known as Gorky, is the fourth largest city in Russia, located about 400 km Northeast of Moscow.
